StaveWave — Turn sheet music into editable MusicXML
Sheet music conversion begins with uploading a PDF or photograph and ends with editable MusicXML ready for notation software. StaveWave processes source files through optical recognition and generates MusicXML output, but instead of presenting a fully automated result, it flags uncertain measures and displays them alongside the original scan. This side-by-side comparison allows users to validate the conversion before exporting.
The workflow centers on reviewing flagged sections. Each uncertain measure opens beside its corresponding location on the source page, enabling direct comparison between what was recognized and what appears in the original document. Users can edit notes, adjust rhythm, and play back individual measures to verify accuracy. Once corrections are made, the system validates changes—for example, confirming that a corrected note duration now matches the time signature shown in the scan.
Export options include MusicXML, compressed MXL, and MIDI formats, with compatibility for Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore, and Finale. The exported file records which measures were flagged and what modifications were applied, creating a documented trail of the review process. Beyond conversion, StaveWave also accepts existing MusicXML files for engraving into PDFs, compressed MusicXML, and MIDI output.
The service targets musicians, arrangers, and copyists specifically. Development priorities include whole-score reconstruction that integrates notes, voices, lyrics, and page structure, along with automatic re-examination of unclear passages. Current conversions are explicitly positioned as drafts requiring human review rather than finished products.
Pricing operates on a credit system with no subscription or monthly fees. New accounts receive 100 free credits. Conversions cost two credits per source page, while standalone engraving of MusicXML, MXL, or MEI files costs ten credits per job. Credits are charged when processing begins, with refunds issued for failed or cancelled jobs. Additional credit packages are available at five dollars for 500 credits, ten dollars for 1,100 credits (ten percent bonus), or twenty dollars for 2,400 credits (twenty percent bonus). Cleanup, editing, and downloads incur no separate charges.
